Baptist Coelho
Baptist Coelho is an Indian artist born in 1977. His work is based on different unspoken stories kept silent through time thus revealing both the physical and psychological repercussions caused by the war.
His research process is based on archival study, ethnography, and engagement with military and civilians, he investigates issues related to conflict, war (and war museums), conscription, commemoration, heroism, emotion, fear, healing, the body and its gender.
In 2006 Baptist Coelho completed his MA at the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design, UK. He has been awarded the Sovereign Asian Art, Hong Kong and the Indian Promising Artist Award.
Among his solo exhibitions Galerie Saint-Séverin, Paris (France); Somerset House, London (UK); Goethe-Zentrum, Hyderabad (India); Project 88, Mumbai (India); LAMO, Leh (India); Pump House Gallery, London (UK); Grand Palais, Bern (Switzerland). Baptist Coelho has exhibited, performed and shown his films in various institutions Stamford Arts Centre, Singapore; SH Ervin Gallery, Sydney (Australia); Centre Pompidou, Paris (France); New Art Exchange, Nottingham (UK); Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (France); CASS Sculpture Foundation, Goodwood (UK); National Art Gallery Zacheta, Warsaw (Poland); Gwangju Art Museum (South Korea).
Baptist Coelho was artist in residence at In Flanders Field Museum, Ypres; NTU CCA, Singapore; Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris; Artspace, Sydney; Leverhulme Department of War Studies, King’s College London, UK; Récollets, Paris; Delfina Foundation, London; among others.
The artist lives and works in Mumbai, India.
